Marina Brbot

Marina Brbot was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia and moved to British Columbia, Canada with her family as a teenager. Moving back to Melbourne in her early 20's. Marina considers herself an Australian born to Croatian parents. Living the best of both cultures she has always been led by her creative nature and became an award-winning photographer and author of her first book Because She Can.

It was in her 50's that she was ready to reevaluate her life, step out of her comfort zone, put her fears behind her and unleash the creative urge that was buried deep within her soul. Realising that it was time to take her passion and fascination with women, women that collectively not only believe in a cause and choose to practice their values but also contribute to our world in a positive way. Marina wanted to give these women a voice and a platform to speak from. "I was afraid that the world may come to an end, or I may die without me achieving what I knew was possible". This is what inspired Marina to write "Because She Can".

She took her vulnerable self, turned it into the courageous being she had to be, she took every rejection life had to throw at her and turned it into redirection.

"Never say never, take what you have, run with it, kick all obstacles out of your way then run a little faster".

Session Synopsis: Because She Can
Join Marina as she shares her journey on what it took for her to unleash her creative urge and write “Because She Can” – a coffee table book that interviews 30 diverse and amazing women who have contributed to Melbourne and the world. She will share the journey of being invited into these women’s homes, or workplace, women from many diverse cultures and religious beliefs and the impact their stories had on her. Marina will share the emotions, discoveries and inspiration she got from each of these women. Marina’s journey shows that by putting your mind to something you are passionate about; you can accomplish anything as long as it is for the good and the love of humankind.

Sally Bruce

Former CEO, AMP Bank

Exiting CEO of AMP Bank after 4 years, having delivered double digit earnings growth across this period. Successfully led the Bank through a major brand crisis, and navigated the Banking Royal Commission without any matters for account. In crisis conditions maintained business growth & performance, grew customer numbers & retained the senior leadership of the business.

Sally has more than 30 years’ experience in banking and financial services across with substantial P&L leadership roles across AMP, National Australia Bank & Macquarie Group. She is a talented leader who drives positive culture & has a track record in regulated, scale & cross border environments. She has repeatedly delivered profit & growth without compromise to risk management, customers or shareholders. A former CFO who has successfully transitioned to CEO. Andrew Grant

Author of the book ‘Who Killed Creativity?... and ‘The Innovation Race’

Andrew Grant is recognised as a global creative thinking pioneer and highly engaging keynote speaker. As the author of several books and over 30 original and sophisticated organizational development programs on the market today, Andrew brings a unique contemporary perspective to the field of innovative thinking and creative problem solving. He is best known as the co-author of the books The Innovation Race: How to Change a Culture to Change the Game, along with international bestseller Who Killed Creativity?... And How Can We Get it Back?

Andrew Grant and his partner Dr Gaia Grant (University of Sydney Business School researcher) have spent 30 years travelling the world to look at creativogenic cultures, and why is it that some societies & companies seem to have raced ahead with innovation, while others appear to have been left behind. As a result they have developed a CSI style board game to help teams diagnose their creativity, AND a validated Innovation Climate Indicator (iCLi) to assess the innovation readiness in leaders, so as to manage tension in executive teams embracing change. This is all to ensure innovation can be sustainably implemented.

Session Synopsis: WHO KILLED CREATIVITY and HOW CAN WE GET IT BACK?

We need to be creative to be innovative. But the relentless push to innovate faster may be undermining the whole creative process. In our rush for end results, we could ironically be killing the very thing that will lead us to innovation: creativity. Recent research has revealed that creative thinking will be the most important leadership attribute in the next 10 years. Yet it has been identified that even though IQ has been on the rise, creative thinking (CQ) has been rapidly declining since the 1990s. CQ has also been found to drop over an individual’s lifespan. We are now at a point where all the design thinking strategies and innovation labs in the world won’t help a team if there are significant psychological or environmental and cultural blocks to the creative probes. This presentation takes the participants on a journey from the classroom to the boardroom to understand the impact of the current creativity crisis.

Licia Heath

Chief Executive Officer, Women for Election Australia

Licia Heath is CEO of the for-purpose organisation, Women for Election Australia (WFEA), a non-partisan group committed to inspire and equip more women to successfully run for office at the local, state and federal levels.

Licia ran as an Independent candidate in the high-profile Wentworth by-election in October 2018 and helped shape the political debate on a national platform. In addition, over the past three years she’s initiated and led the campaign for a new public high school in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs.

Licia’s experience of seeding and leading an issue-based campaign, her decision to run for public office and her role with WFEA, combine to show the positive effects of engaging in the political process in Australia. This session compliments the tone of our ‘Women Giving Back’ objectives at FEW.

Heath’s background includes 19 years in the finance and asset management sector including at Deutsche Bank and Credit Suisse in London and Australia. She helped establish, and is a shareholder of, a $5b AUM Australian-based asset management business, Ironbark Asset Management.

This is a rare opportunity to hear from a woman who stood for office in a high-profile by-election at a time when political parties are feeling the heat on gender.

Women for Election Australia is a non-partisan, for purpose organisation committed to increasing the proportion of women in public office. WFEA provides a unique combination of tailored training and hands on support for women considering entering political life. WFEA helps to demystify the political process and show women how they can run successful campaigns. Steven Hooker

Chief Executive Officer, Resimax Group, Olympic Gold Medalist and former Captain of the Australian Olympic Athletics Team

Strong and innovative management, coupled with a fierce focus, are the qualities that set Steve apart. A former Captain of the Australian Olympic Athletics Team from 2008 – 2012, he knows what discipline, commitment and hard work can achieve when combined with strong leadership.

With an impressive series of senior management roles under his belt, Steve now applies his formidable skills to the property development industry, introducing innovative leadership techniques to achieve breakthrough results. As the Resimax Group prepares for dynamic growth in its next phase of Australian and Asian expansion, Steve’s strong commitment to leadership is a winning asset.

An Aussie pole vault sensation, Steve is the first Australian man to ever hold both the Olympic and world titles concurrently. One of the stars of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Steve became the first Australian field athlete to win Olympic gold in 60 years, the first Australian male track or field gold medalist since 1968 and the first Australian athletics Olympic champion since Cathy Freeman in 2000.

Steve’s win in Beijing was also the first for an Australian in that event. In dramatic circumstances, Hooker twice cleared clutch jumps on his third attempt in the final, before clinching the gold medal with yet another third attempt clearance at 5.90m. With the gold medal secured he went on to break the Olympic record with another third and final attempt heart-stopper at 5.96m.

Steve continued his phenomenal run in 2009 by defeating world class fields in New York, Boston, Paris, the Ukrainian city of Donetsk, Stockholm, Sydney and Melbourne before claiming gold in the IAAF World Championships in Berlin. That win was even more significant considering Hooker courageously battled injury right up until he leapt for gold after tearing his thigh muscle in training 12 days prior to the final.

Steve is pole vaulting history’s third highest jumper with his 6.06m National record set in Boston in 2009.

Session Synopsis: Engage, Coach and Grow
In this session, Alex Tullio will facilitate the session with Steven Hooker on how to engage, coach and grow effectively. Steve will be sharing with us what discipline, commitment and hard work can achieve when it is combined with strong leadership.

Marionne MacRitchie

Co Chair, The Emerge Foundation

In 2019 the Australian Financial Review recognised Marionne as one of 100 Women of Influence for her inspirational work for the Emerge Foundation in empowering women in education and health.

Marionne was also a recipient of the Women in Financial Services pro bono award in 2016.

The judges’ comments were:
“Marionne co-founded the Emerge Foundation which has significantly advanced the cause of women in East Timor. Her networking within the financial services industry has created a huge awareness of the importance of this cause and through her efforts 60 financial organisations now support the work of the Emerge Foundation. The work done by Marionne is inspirational.”

Marionne was recently awarded the title of Honorary Fellow of the ACU. The university’s award of this title “acknowledges her extensive experience and moral and strategic leadership in the finance area of the corporate sector”. The appointment is pro-bono and she will work with the Faculty of Law and Business.

Marionne grew up in Wagga Wagga and joined the financial services industry 23 years ago. Her can-do attitude led her to be the Director of Administration and Client Services in a well-respected financial planning group which is now part of the Stanford Brown Group.

Marionne was introduced to a group of Australian academics working to re-build East Timor’s education and health services. She became aware of the acute lack of education in the country meant that 60 per cent of the women and 44 per cent of the men were illiterate and none of the teachers had any formal training.

The Foundation’s major fundraising to date:
• Teachers for Timor project – 350 women and 38 men have graduated with a Bachelor of Teaching degree after receiving Emerge Foundation scholarships. These young women and men are empowered by their education. Five of the recent graduates were employed by the World Bank to implement the new educational syllabus in Timor.
• Barefoot Nurses program was embarked upon as 1 in 4 women die in childbirth. Infant and maternal mortality rates are unacceptably high. The program trains local nurses, pharmacists and health care workers to be more adequately informed and equipped when caring for people in isolated regions of Baucau, Timor-Leste. 400 nurses trained in general nursing and basic midwifery.
• Future in Youth is an innovative sports-based program teaching East Timorese young people about leadership, respect, fairness, and fun. The program includes 32 schools, 48 coaches and 5000 children participating.

Sharon Maynard

Division Director, Business Banking, Macquarie Group

Sharon started at Macquarie in 1998 and has held various roles in Business Banking with extensive experience in the Insurance Premium Funding and Commercial Finance industries. This has led to her being appointed Chief Operating Officer of two businesses.

Her wide experience in the Insurance Premium Funding industry includes multiple acquisitions both onshore and offshore, as well as establishing new businesses and managing the integration of these acquisitions into the Macquarie infrastructure.

Sharon is an energetic leader who drives positive results and is an accomplished problem solver and negotiator. Her strong people skills have enabled her to lead major projects and teams in time pressured environments. She believes that you can achieve anything with a positive attitude and a calm demeanour.

Sharon is passionate about developing opportunities for women in finance and is a strong supporter of Financial Executive Women.

Suzie Riddell

Chief Executive Officer, Social Ventures Australia (SVA)

‘I love working on big system change. My vision is for transformations across education, employment, housing and beyond that allow more people in Australia to thrive.’

Suzie Riddell is Chief Executive Officer at SVA. She previously held the role of Chief Strategy Officer, leading the Strategy & Advocacy team. She draws on her extensive experience in the social purpose and commercial sectors to lead SVA’s systems change agenda. Suzie has led the development of innovative education and employment ventures, securing philanthropic seed capital and demonstrating impact to win scale funding from government. She has built SVA’s Practice Area and Policy & Advocacy capabilities.

Prior to joining SVA, Suzie was a consultant at Bain & Company. Suzie holds a Bachelor of Accounting (University Medal, First Class Honours) from the University of Technology, Sydney and a Master of Philosophy (International Relations) from the University of Cambridge. She is a Non-Executive Director of The Observership Program, and formerly of YWCA NSW and Holdsworth Community Centre and Services. She was a winner of AFR BOSS Magazine’s Young Executive of the Year 2017.

Rabia Siddique

Humanitarian Speaker, Author, Mentor & Coach

Rabia is an international humanitarian lawyer, retired British Army senior officer, former war crimes and terrorism prosecutor and hostage survivor.

She has undertaken humanitarian aid work in Asia, South America, Europe and the Middle East, for which she was decorated by Queen Elizabeth II.

Having survived a hostage crisis in Iraq in 2005 Rabia sued the British Government for discrimination when both the military and government tried to cover up her involvement in the incident, which saw her leading hostage negotiations for the release of two British Special Forces illegally kidnapped and detained by Iraqi based terrorists. Rabia was held hostage for over eight hours and subjected to cruel and unusual treatment in front of her male colleagues. After their eventual rescue Rabia’s colleagues were recognised, psychologically supported and decorated for their efforts and bravery, however Rabia was gagged, ignored and ordered to never speak of the role she played on that fateful day where she almost lost her life.

As a result of her betrayal at the hands of her military superiors and the then Prime Minister of Great Britain Rabia was diagnosed with PTSD and after her recovery she held both the British Army and Government to account for their systematic discrimination of women and ethnic minorities. Her landmark case made international news and saw the floodgates open for many similar cases. It heralded profound changes in defence and public policy, attitudes and the support offered to female soldiers serving on the frontline, ethnic minorities and military personnel suffering with PTSD.

Rabia’s memoir “Equal Justice: My Journey as a Woman, a Soldier and a Muslim” was published by Pan MacMillan in 2013 and quickly became a best-seller. She is currently writing her second book “A Beautiful Revolution”, a book about the power we all have to be the change in our lives and in the world around us.

Rabia is now a multi award winning story teller, inspirational speaker, leadership consultant, media commentator and human rights advocate. Peace and the sustainability of our planet is what drives her rabiasiddique.com

But her biggest challenge and joy is being a mother to her young triplet boys!

Session Synopsis: What is holding you hostage?
Rabia addresses the topic of resilience – what it means, how one can learn to be resilient and recognising the warning signs in order to prevent future unnecessary hardship, and to plan ahead in order to predict and overcome future obstacles. It is in the context of this keynote that Rabia asks her audience a key question – what is holding them hostage? So, why the change from opera? Though successful, Sally felt a lack of deeper fulfilment in what she was doing. She considered life alternatives that aligned with her values at that time, developed a change strategy, and took the leap! If not now, when?

Sally helps people turn their baggage into gold. The limiting beliefs we have about ourselves are simply lies we accepted as truth, usually when we were children. These beliefs can manifest as low self-confidence, Imposter Syndrome, chronic stress, chronic fatigue, anxiety, depression, or even the sense of being stuck or having lost your spark.

Marielle joined PEXA in May 2013 and is currently Chief Financial Services Officer. Marielle has over 15 years of experience in the Financial Service sector.

Prior to joining PEXA, Marielle held numerous roles within the Institutional Banking division at National Australia Bank, where her client portfolio over the three years consisted of flagship Australian and multinational retail, consumer, agriculture and Government clients. Marielle was responsible for ensuring that the complex banking needs of both the clients and division were delivered locally and globally.

Marielle has an in-depth banking knowledge and throughout her career has developed an appreciation of a range of banking products by understanding and meeting customer needs. Marielle has been responsible for product design, delivery and management as well as leading and developing successful national sales teams within both National Australia Bank and Australia and New Zealand Banking Corporation.

Extensive knowledge of the banking space allows Marielle to provide valuable insight into the ways in which a digital property transaction environment stands to improve the way Financial Institutions and Practitioners work together in effecting property settlements for their customers.

Marielle has a strong passion for customer innovation, change and consistent improvement and holds a Bachelor of Banking and Finance from Monash University, Melbourne. Marielle was named the IT Innovator of the Year in the 2017 Women in Finance Awards.

She is well known for her skills in connecting the right people at the right time to make things happen. Margaret understands the importance of establishing great stakeholder relationships and building your networks and having advocates in your corner. She is social, vibrant and driven about making a difference.

Margaret Zita, with a plethora of knowledge about the issues of Childhood Cancer and the impact it has not only on the children themselves, but also for their families - embarked on the job she describes as her lifelong passion as the newly appointed CEO of My Room where she volunteered for over 15 years. She feels privileged and honoured to be My Room’s first full time executive, now leading a strong all-volunteer committee with the goal of taking the charity to the next level so that much needed research and trials continue toward finding the much needed cure for children suffering from varying forms of cancer.

Margaret Zita dedicates many hours to speaking and fundraising to make the 100% cure a reality! Her greatest achievement is raising her 3 boys David (22 years), Matthew (18 years) and William (12 years) and wife to Tony of 25 years.
